Dearest friends, Gold Wing enthusiasts, and WRSA family members,
It is once again my privilege to present the Annual Report of our beloved Wing Riders SA Association. This year is particularly special, as we celebrate the 40th Wing Fling, to be held at the Little Pilgrims Boutique Hotel in Hazyview.
In Memoriam
As in previous years, we also had to bid our final farewells to two beloved members of WRSA.
The first was Johan Hattingh, a founder member of our prestigious Association. For many years, Johan made invaluable contributions, not only to the Western Cape Chapter but also to Wing Riders SA, where he served as National President and was an Honorary Member. During his last year, Johan once again stepped forward to serve as Chairperson of the Western Cape Chapter. Despite the diagnosis and prognosis of his serious illness, Johan still attended the 2024 Wing Fling at Gariep Dam – a decision that meant so much to all of us. Only a month later, Johan passed away and was laid to rest on 15 November 2025. Rest in peace, Johan. May you look down on us with pride as we continue to build on the Association you loved so dearly.
Only a few days later, we also lost Rassie Sinden of Central Chapter. Rassie’s final months were long and painful, yet he always remained positive and deeply proud of his Gold Wing Trike. Wherever he went, people wanted to talk to him. He was a soft-spoken, gentle giant who never complained and always had a smile on his face. Rassie was a member of various motorcycle clubs, including the Vespa Club. His memorial service, held at the Krugersdorp Bikers’ Church, was attended by hundreds of riders – including more than sixty members of Central Chapter. This turnout speaks volumes about how many lives Rassie touched. Until we meet again, Rassie.
Being a celebratory year, I am pleased to report on and concentrate on all the positive aspects we as WRSA members enjoyed since the 2024 Wing Fling.
Membership
On a positive note, our membership remains stable and continues to grow, albeit gradually, across all Chapters. It is encouraging to see the younger generation joining our Association, which has already brought down the average age of our members from the early seventies to the upper sixties.
Sadly, two of our oldest members – Wempie and Neelie Jacobs – decided to step down and sell their Gold Wing at the remarkable age of 84. We will miss them dearly.
Outrides and representation
The importance of outrides, and of exhibiting our Gold Wing bikes and trikes (with or without trailers), cannot be overemphasised. Outrides showcase our Association, foster camaraderie, and remind us of the joy and shared experiences that unite us.
I encourage every member to enjoy these outrides to the fullest. When parking at venues, let us always make ourselves available to answer questions from curious visitors. And above all, remember that our behaviour reflects directly on the reputation of Wing Riders SA.
Finances
The finances of the National Council, as well as two of the Chapters, are in a healthy state. The Garden Route Chapter, being newly established in the second quarter of 2024 with only a handful of members, is still finding its footing financially. However, we are confident that in time, they too will reap the rewards of their dedication and hard work.
Governance and participation
The introduction of our new voting system proved highly successful. More than 90% of WRSA members cast their votes via WhatsApp, and we have seen this method applied effectively at Chapter level as well, with excellent levels of participation. The goal of returning the Association to its rightful owners – the members – has been achieved, and it is clear that this was the correct way forward.
Recognition and awards
We all know that some members truly eat, sleep, and breathe Wing Riders SA. This dedication was recognised by our National Marketing Coordinator, Zenda Els, who proposed the introduction of a President’s Award. The National Council approved this proposal and further extended it to include a Chairperson’s Award.
- The President’s Award represents the highest honour within the Association and is reserved for truly exceptional contributions, service, or achievements that go far beyond what is normally expected.
- The Chairperson’s Award recognises valuable contributions at Chapter level – such as dedication, initiative, and meeting the needs of fellow members.
Both awards are subject to specific conditions and criteria to ensure fairness and prestige. Our hope is that these awards will inspire and motivate members to aim higher and give even more to our Association.
The 40th Wing Fling – celebrating 40 years of friendship and the open road
More than four decades ago, a small group of passionate Honda Gold Wing riders in South Africa decided that their love for the open road, their machines, and their community deserved a celebration. What began as a simple gathering of like-minded riders has grown into one of the most cherished traditions of Wing Riders SA: the Wing Fling.
In October 1985, 64 Gold Wings arrived at the inaugural Wing Fling, held at the Rob Ferreira Resort near Christiana. There were no grand plans, no elaborate programmes – just the joy of being together and the thrill of the ride. Yet, that first event planted the seed of what would become an annual highlight on every Wing Rider’s calendar.
Over the years, the Wing Fling grew steadily in size and spirit. Each year brought a new town, a new venue, and fresh memories: long convoys of Gold Wings gliding through the countryside, evenings filled with laughter around campfires, spirited competitions, and friendships forged that would last a lifetime. From coastal towns to bushveld retreats, the Wing Fling became a celebration not only of motorcycling, but of family, camaraderie, and the freedom of the road.
The event also carried its own evolving traditions – rides through scenic routes, bike shows where Wings gleamed in the sun, the famous singing of the Wing Song, and the closing gala dinners where members reflected on another year together.
And now, in 2025, we mark the 40th Wing Fling – a milestone that speaks to the strength of the Wing Riders community. Hosted this year at the Little Pilgrims Boutique Hotel in Hazyview, this special celebration promises not only to honour the history of the event, but also to showcase the enduring spirit that has kept it alive for four decades.
Forty Wing Flings mean forty years of laughter, countless kilometres travelled, and memories that stretch across South Africa. It is a reminder that the Wing Fling is far more than just an event – it is a living tradition, a family reunion on two wheels, and a testament to the shared passion for the Honda Gold Wing.
As we celebrate this 40th Wing Fling, we look back with gratitude at all those who have contributed to its story, and forward with excitement to the many Wing Flings still to come. The road continues, and so does the legacy.
Conclusion
From the content of this report, I believe it is fair to say that 2025 has been a positive and uplifting year – both at Chapter level and nationally.
I thank each and every one of you for your contributions throughout the year. Together, we are writing the next chapter in WRSA’s remarkable journey, and I look forward with great anticipation to 2026 and beyond.
Wing Rider Regards
Pieter Fourie
